				<title>Why Register Your Number?</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/why-register-your-number</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <p><img src="assets/images/G-Net front page/DO NOT CALL REGISTER.logo.png" alt="" width="321" height="137" /></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 140%;"><strong>DO NOT CALL REGISTER is gaining momentum ....</strong></span></p>
<p>In less than five years, seven million numbers have been
listed on the DO NOT CALL REGISTER, including just over half of Australia&rsquo;s
fixed line home numbers.&nbsp;&nbsp; </p>
<p>"Many Australians
are choosing not to receive telemarketing and fax marketing,&rdquo; said the regulator Chairman of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA),
Chris Chapman.&nbsp; The ACMA is Australia's regulator for
broadcasting, the internet, radiocommunications and telecommunications.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, the
uptake in registrations is not only on fixed line numbers, with more than three
million mobile numbers now on the register.&nbsp;
Mobiles accounted for 75 per cent of new registrations over the last
eight months.&nbsp; </p>
<p><strong>Why register your number with the Do Not Call
Register?&nbsp;</strong> </p>
<p>The Do Not Call Register
allows you to greatly reduce the amount of unwanted telemarketing calls and
marketing faxes you receive.&nbsp;
Telemarketers and fax marketers are required by law to stop contacting
you once you&rsquo;re on the register.</p>
<p><strong>Will
registering my number stop all telemarketing calls and marketing faxes?</strong>&nbsp; </p>
<p>No, registration won&rsquo;t stop all calls and
faxes.&nbsp; Some public interest
organisations (charities, political parties and educational institutions) can
still call numbers listed on the register.&nbsp;
This ensures these organisations can continue to provide valuable
services to the community.&nbsp; </p>
<p>If you have
an existing relationship with a business, it can still contact you, but you can
advise them if you do not wish to receive telemarketing calls or marketing
faxes from them in the future.&nbsp; </p>
<p><strong>$250,000 Penalty</strong></p>
<p>Anyone can complain if they think a
telemarketer is breaching the standard, and penalties of up to $250,000 can
apply.&nbsp; There is also a Fax Marketing
Industry Standard with similar enforceable rules. </p>
<p><strong>How to Register</strong></p>
<p>Registration on the secure database is free, valid for five years and you can re-register or remove your numbers at any time.&nbsp; To
register or seek further information, go to the DO NOT CALL REGISTER website by
clicking <a href="http://www.donotcall.gov.au">HERE</a>.&nbsp; </p>

				<title>Stanthorpe Waste Facility Opens Seven Days</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/stanthorpe-waste-facility-opens-seven-days</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #000080;"><strong>Stanthorpe waste facility opens seven days</strong></span></h2>
<p>Southern Downs Regional Council announced today that the Stanthorpe Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre will now open seven days a week (except Christmas Day).</p>
<p>It will also be open an extra half an hour each morning and during the summer months it will open for an additional hour in the evening.</p>
<p>Previously the Centre was closed on Tuesdays.</p>
<p>&ldquo;These longer hours make it even easier for Stanthorpe residents to dispose of domestic, commercial and recyclable waste appropriately,&rdquo; said Tim O&rsquo;Brien, Acting Director Planning &amp; Environment.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We encourage people who are self-hauling rubbish to the Stanthorpe facility to actively separate their waste into recyclables such as cardboard, glass, plastic, metal (including white goods), construction and demolition waste and green waste,&rdquo; Mr O&rsquo;Brien said.</p>
<p>&ldquo;All of these items are recycled at the Stanthorpe facility, thereby reducing the amount of refuse that goes to landfill and extending the life of our landfill.&nbsp; Sustainability starts with individuals, partnering with Council services.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Residents are reminded that domestic waste including furniture, refrigerators and stoves can all be disposed of free of charge at the facility.</p>
<p>&ldquo;People can also come to the Stanthorpe facility to purchase our high quality garden mulch made from recycled green waste,&rdquo; Mr O&rsquo;Brien said.</p>
<p>The extended hours are in line with Council&rsquo;s waste management strategy and Corporate Plan goals to improve waste management in the Region.</p>
<p>Opening hours are now:&nbsp;</p>
<p>- Summer (1 Sept - 30 April): 7am - 6pm;&nbsp;<br />- Winter (1 May - 31 August): 7am - 5pm.&nbsp;<br /><br />For details on opening hours at any Southern Downs waste facility see<a href="http://www.southerndowns.qld.gov.au/" target="_blank">www.southerndowns.qld.gov.au</a>.</p>

				<title>Fireweed Survey</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/fireweedsurvey</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <div class="section">
<div class="section">Media Release<img style="float: right; margin: 2px;" title="Fireweed" src="assets/images/G-Net front page/PHOTO1.JPG" alt="Fireweed" width="400" height="301" /></div>
<div class="section">Date 21/11/11 No.162/11</div>
<div class="layoutArea">
<div class="column">
<p><span>Survey to inform new fireweed management guide
</span></p>
<p><span>Researchers from the University of New England and CSIRO will soon be conducting a survey of rural landholders as
part of a two-year project exploring control and management options for fireweed.
</span></p>
<p><span>The project is being funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and
Forestry (DAFF).
</span></p>
<p><span>Fireweed, a native of South Africa, is a poisonous plant that, when eaten by cattle or horses, may lead to a decrease in
condition and, eventually, death. It is capable of germinating and flowering throughout much of the year, making
year-long management difficult.
</span></p>
<p><span>Fireweed is recognisable from its yellow daisy-like flowers, which have 13 petals. It can grow up to 60 centimetres in
height and spreads rapidly.
</span></p>
<p><span>The survey will examine the ecological conditions under which fireweed grows best, what kinds of pasture grasses
compete most effectively with fireweed, what methods landholders use to control the weed, and the impact it has had
on farm management.
</span></p>
<p><span>As fireweed is primarily a weed of coastal grazing pastures, the survey will be aimed specifically at graziers and dairy
farmers in coastal NSW and south-east Queensland, where it is currently spreading rapidly.
</span></p>
<p><span>UNE&rsquo;s Professor Brian Sindel, the leader of the project and a world authority on fireweed, conducted a similar survey
during the 1980s, and so the 2011 survey will provide important information on how the impact and management of
fireweed have changed over the intervening period.
</span></p>
<p><span>The eagerness of fireweed-impacted communities to manage this weed more effectively is illustrated by the formation
of landholder action groups, such as the Bega Valley Fireweed Association, and Dorrigo Community Weed Action.
Other aspects of the fireweed control research project include field trials to improve understanding of the ecology of
fireweed, and research currently under way in South Africa into potential biological control options.
</span></p>
<p><span>&ldquo;The results of the research will be provided to landholders through a management guide to be published in 2012, as
well as through DAFF, local community groups, and a project Web site,&rdquo; Professor Sindel said.
</span></p>
<p><span>&ldquo;We hope that landholders who receive a copy of the survey will return it promptly with all questions answered,&rdquo; he
added. &ldquo;We also hope that landholders who do not receive the survey in the mail will consider completing it online.
The experience of those who complete the survey will help Australian landholders to improve their ability to control
fireweed.&rdquo;</span></p>
<p><span>The survey may be found online at the following address:&nbsp;<span style="text-decoration: underline;"><span><a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/fireweed" target="_blank">https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/fireweed</a></span></span><br /></span></p>
<p><span>A link to the online version of the fireweed impact survey, as well as more information on the research, is available on
the project&rsquo;s Web site, hosted on </span><span><a title="Fireweed Survey link" href="http://www.ruralfutures.une.edu.au" target="_blank">www.ruralfutures.une.edu.au</a>.</span></p>
<p>More information is available on our &lsquo;news&rsquo; web page: &nbsp;<a href="http://www.ruralfutures.une.edu.au/fireweed/news.htm" target="_blank">http://www.ruralfutures.une.edu.au/fireweed/news.htm</a></p>
<p><span>People who would like to receive a paper copy of the fireweed impact survey, or who are interested in finding out
more about the project, can contact Professor Brian Sindel in UNE&rsquo;s School of Environmental and Rural Science by
an e-mail to </span><span>bsindel@une.edu.au, </span><span>or by phoning (02) 6773 3747.

				<title>Broadband for Seniors Networkers Wanted</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/broadband-for-seniors-networkers-wanted</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <p>Broadband for Seniors Networkers Wanted<br /><br /><br />Statement of Requirements<br /><br />About Adult Learning Australia (ALA)<br />ALA is a 51 year old national peak body for adult and community learning. Our mission is for all Australians to have access to the benefits of Lifelong and Lifewide Learning, including into the senior years.<br /><br />About Broadband for Seniors (BFS)<br />Broadband for Seniors (BFS) is a Commonwealth Government initiative funded through FACHSIA to provide free internet access and tutoring to 2000 kiosks across Australia. The kiosks are based in community centres, aged care centres and other places where Seniors gather. &nbsp;Tutors are volunteers and work with pre-prepared materials. &nbsp;NEC computers are implementing the program with support from ALA, Australian Seniors Computer Club Association and U3A Online.<br /><br />This is the second iteration of BFS. The first project ran from 2007 to 2011. This second iteration will conclude in June of 2013.<br /><br />About the BFS Tutors Community of Practice<br />ALA&rsquo;s component of the BFS program is to support the volunteer tutors working in the 2000 kiosks through maintaining a community of practice through online, phone and face to face communication. The Community of Practice includes regular web based professional development sessions for tutors and a bulletin board for posting information and useful learning resources.<br /><br />The need for a Community of Practice for volunteer tutors working in Broadband for Seniors Kiosks emerged early in the first iteration of the project but became particularly important as the project moved from the service delivery to ongoing support phases for various sites. &nbsp;Some of the &ldquo;similar situations&rdquo; that volunteer tutors found themselves dealing with were:<br />&bull; Varying levels of understanding / expertise from the host organisations about recruiting, supporting and sustaining volunteers. An extraordinarily broad range of organisations applied to host kiosks, some of whom added the service to well established community development activities and systems, some of whom had limited infrastructure and community development expertise.</p>
<p><br />&bull; Varying levels of expectations about the software provided and its potential for impacting on the lives of seniors. The initial stage of the project sought to meet the basic access needs of the broadest range of seniors in the most accessible way. <div><span id="internal-source-marker_0.7754672719165683">For those of you who&rsquo;ve been reading the GraniteNet site religiously, you may have noticed a few articles about something called &ldquo;Twitter&rdquo;. What is twitter you may ask? Well the other articles that have been written can be found </span><a href="news/twitter" target="_blank">here</a><span>&nbsp;and </span><a href="granitenet.com.au/news/using-twitter-part-2" target="_blank">here</a><span>.</span><br /><br /><span>Read those? Good. Those articles are written mainly for the use of individuals looking to communicate with their world, but that&rsquo;s not all it can be used for. The opportunity for businesses and community to embrace twitter is immense. For example, businesses can advertise free of charge on twitter, they can establish a real relationship with their followers and can easily provide customer support, without the hassle of making multiple phone calls.</span><br /><br /><span>Community groups, however, can do something similar. Groups can advertise events, communicate with members, discuss issues with the public and advertise community meetings. <title>Using Twitter Part 2</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/using-twitter-part-2</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <p>If you read our first twitter article last week, you may be
interested in the second instalment. If you recall we covered the hash-tag &ldquo;#&rdquo;,
the at-tag &ldquo;@&rdquo; and following. That gets you going with the use of Twitter and
the de-coding of the tweets. This article will be focusing on the advanced use
of twitter.</p>
<p>&ldquo;<strong>Retweet</strong>&rdquo; &ndash; Facebook has &ldquo;like&rdquo;, Twitter has &ldquo;<strong>Retweet</strong>&rdquo;. <strong>Retweet</strong> is simply
sharing tweets. If someone posts something of interest, for example &ldquo;The #Apple&amp;Grape
Harvest Festival starts Today!&rdquo;, then you can click the &ldquo;<strong>Retweet</strong>&rdquo; option at the bottom of the tweet. This adds that tweet to
your feed and all of your followers can see that information</p>
<p>.<img src="assets/images/Retweet.jpg" alt="" width="322" height="100" /></p>
<p>&ldquo;<strong>Reply</strong>&rdquo; &ndash; When you <strong>Reply</strong>
to a tweet, the &ldquo;tweetbox&rdquo; automatically inputs the at-tag of the user that you&rsquo;re
<strong>Reply</strong>ing to. For example if you <strong>Reply</strong> to the post &ldquo;The #Apple&amp;Grape
Harvest Festival starts Today!&rdquo; when Replying to that you&rsquo;ll be tweeting
directly at that tweet, starting a conversation between two people. If they <strong>Reply</strong> to you, the conversation
continues</p>
<p>.<img src="assets/images/Reply.jpg" alt="" width="321" height="102" /></p>
<p>&ldquo;<strong>Favourite</strong>&rdquo; &ndash; You can <strong>Favourite</strong>
a tweet as well. Why <strong>Favourite</strong>? Well
that&rsquo;s simple. If someone links to something or talks about something you
really want to read later, perhaps a job advertisement, you can <strong>Favourite</strong> that tweet. When you <strong>Favourite</strong> a tweet it adds it to a separate
feed so you can easily see all the tweets you really want to read.</p>
<p><img src="assets/images/Favourite.jpg" alt="" width="321" height="101" /></p> ]]></description>

				<title>Spreading the News</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/spreadingnews</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <p>Regular readers of the front page of Granite Net will have noticed we now put on events and happenings that come to our attention or which are sent to us from community groups and others.</p>
<p>We have set up a roster of volunteers to do this and are very willing to put more items on for any community group that have web sites on GraniteNet and also from anyone who has a community oriented activity or event they would like to bring to wider attention.</p>
<p>In addition we are now using Twitter to link these events to a wider audience much like Granite Belt Wine Tourism do with their Twitter links; @GraniteBeltWine.&nbsp; For example we are now compiling a set of happenings for each weekend for quick reference.&nbsp; Our Twitter feeds are @Granitenet and @StanthorpeQLD.</p>
<p>If you wish to make use of this please send us the details of your event with dates as appropriate.&nbsp; This is best in the form of a plain text document and a separate picture to go beside it of about 80kb.&nbsp; If you have a flyer that can be downloaded such as a .jpg then send us that as well <script language='Javascript' type='text/javascript'>
<!--
document.write('<a href="mai');
document.write('lto');
document.write(':&#99;&#111;&#110;&#116;&#97;&#99;&#116;');
document.write('@');
document.write('&#103;&#114;&#97;&#110;&#105;&#116;&#101;&#110;&#101;&#116;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;&#46;&#97;&#117;">');
document.write('&#116;&#111;&#32;&#117;&#115;&#32;&#98;&#121;&#32;&#101;&#109;&#97;&#105;&#108;<\/a>');
// -->
</script><noscript>&#99;&#111;&#110;&#116;&#97;&#99;&#116; at
&#103;&#114;&#97;&#110;&#105;&#116;&#101;&#110;&#101;&#116; dot &#99;&#111;&#109; dot &#97;&#117;</noscript> and we can provide a link for it.&nbsp; You can also send queries to <script language='Javascript' type='text/javascript'>
<!--
document.write('<a href="mai');
document.write('lto');
document.write(':&#99;&#111;&#110;&#116;&#97;&#99;&#116;');
document.write('@');
document.write('&#103;&#114;&#97;&#110;&#105;&#116;&#101;&#110;&#101;&#116;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;&#46;&#97;&#117;">');
document.write('&#111;&#117;&#114;&#32;&#101;&#109;&#97;&#105;&#108;<\/a>');
// -->
</script><noscript>&#99;&#111;&#110;&#116;&#97;&#99;&#116; at
&#103;&#114;&#97;&#110;&#105;&#116;&#101;&#110;&#101;&#116; dot &#99;&#111;&#109; dot &#97;&#117;</noscript> too.</p>
<p>Remember we will only put on community related items, not commercial advertising (this may come later) and the items will disappear from the front page after their use-by date.</p>
<p>Look forward to hearing from you!&nbsp; Michael Jefferies.</p> ]]></description>

				<title>Twitter on Granitenet</title>
				<link>http://www.granitenet.com.au/news/twitter</link>
				<description><![CDATA[ <p><span>Twitter is a &ldquo;social network&rdquo;, though not in the same way that Facebook or Myspace use the term. Twitter is more of a &ldquo;micro-blogger&rdquo; where small snippets of information are posted by everyone. There is a limit to 140 characters per &ldquo;tweet&rdquo;, which is just enough to say something important without rambling; this makes everything on Twitter quick and to the point.</span></p>
<p><span>Signing up for a Twitter account is as easy (if not easier) than signing up to Facebook, so there really should be no trouble in acquiring a Twitter account.&nbsp; To get started there are a few things that you should know:</span></p>
<p><span>Follow &ndash; With Twitter instead of having a &ldquo;friend&rsquo;s list&rdquo; you have &ldquo;followers&rdquo;. When someone is interested in what you have to say they will &ldquo;Follow&rdquo; you, essentially subscribing to see new tweets. In turn, you can also follow anyone that you have an interest in, without there being any confirmation from either party.</span></p>
<p><span>#word &ndash; The &lsquo;#&rsquo; in a &ldquo;tweet&rdquo; refers to a subject. If you wanted to say something about Stanthorpe you would include &ldquo;#stanthorpe&rdquo; in your tweet so that anyone looking for &lsquo;Stanthorpe&rsquo; would be able to easily find it and tweet back to you.</span></p>
<p><span>@user &ndash; the &lsquo;@&rsquo; in a &ldquo;tweet&rdquo; is a direction. By typing a person&rsquo;s username, for example, &ldquo;<a href="http://www.twitter.com/GraniteNet" target="_blank">@GraniteNet</a>&rdquo; you are tweeting at that person. That person can then see your tweet whether or not they are &lsquo;following&rsquo; you.&nbsp;</span></p>
<p><span>A word of warning before using Twitter: you should never, ever say anything that you wouldn&rsquo;t say to your mother. Why? Because what you post on Twitter can be seen by everyone no matter what, so be cautious of what you say.</span></p>
<p><span>GraniteNet is now teaching the uses of Twitter for individuals and for businesses at a reasonable cost. Call us at 4681 4384 or via Twitter <a href="http://www.twitter.com/GraniteNet" target="_blank">@GraniteNet</a>.</span></p>
<p><span>To contact us about twitter<script language='Javascript' type='text/javascript'>
<!--
document.write('<a href="mai');
document.write('lto');
document.write(':&#116;&#119;&#105;&#116;&#116;&#101;&#114;');
document.write('@');
document.write('&#103;&#114;&#97;&#110;&#105;&#116;&#101;&#110;&#101;&#116;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;&#46;&#97;&#117;">');
document.write('&#32;&#106;&#117;&#115;&#116;&#32;&#117;&#115;&#101;&#32;&#116;&#104;&#105;&#115;&#32;&#108;&#105;&#110;&#107;&#46;<\/a>');
// -->
</script><noscript>&#116;&#119;&#105;&#116;&#116;&#101;&#114; at
&#103;&#114;&#97;&#110;&#105;&#116;&#101;&#110;&#101;&#116; dot &#99;&#111;&#109; dot &#97;&#117;</noscript><br /></span></p>
