Our mission statement is:
“Working together to maintain and improve wildflower ecosystems through increased awareness and improved management”
Aims
The main aims of the Stanthorpe Rare Wildflower Consortium are to:
- provide advice and information on wildflower conservation
- develop an increased awareness of the threats to endangered wildflower species, and
- provide landowners with methods to better manage wildflower ecosystems.
We do this by:
- engaging stakeholder groups who have an interest in, or are affected by, projects we undertake
- having a presence at major community events eg Stanthorpe Show, Gardenfest
- hosting or participating in workshops, field days, presentations on subjects relevant to our cause eg fire, weeds, identification
- seeking funding through affiliated groups to undertake surveys and projects relevant to our cause
- producing publications with information for the general public and private landholders who want to protect wildflower habitats
We do this because:
- We have spectacular wildflower displays emerging in springtime on the Granite Belt
- These displays include over 800 species of flowering plants
- Almost 50 species are listed in the Nature Conservation Act as endangered, vulnerable or rare species
- Many are endemic to the Granite Belt, that is, they are confined to certain locations, and do not occur naturally anywhere else in the world
And major threats to our wildflower habitats include:
- Land clearing
- Grazing
- Weed invasion
- Inappropriate fire regimes
- Illegal harvesting
- Roadworks
