Koala Food Trees

The favourite koala food tree indigenous to the Granite Belt is Eucalyptus tereticornis subsp.  tereticornis, commonly called Blue gum, Forest red gum or Red irongum.                     

Other koala food trees that are indigenous to the Granite Belt are:

  • Eucalyptus albens - White box
  • Eucalyptus biturbinata - Grey gum
  • Eucalyptus blakelyi - Blakely’s red gum
  • Eucalyptus chloroclada - Baradine red gum
  • Eucalyptus codonocarpa - Mallee ash
  • Eucalytpus crebra - Narrow-leaved red ironbark
  • Eucalyptus dealbata - Tumble-down red gum
  • Eucalyptus deanei - Round-leaved gum
  • Eucalytpus melanophloia - Silver-leaved ironbark
  • Eucalyptus melliodora - Yellow box
  • Eucalyptus moluccana - Gum-topped box
  • Eucalyptus nobilis - Manna gum
  • Eucalyptus pauciflora subsp. pauciflora - Snow gum 
  • Eucalyptus pilligaensis - Narrow-leaved grey box
  • Eucalyptus prava - Orange mountain gum
  • Eucalyptus quadrangulata - White-topped box
  • Eucalyptus saligna subsp. saligna - Sydney blue gum
  • Eucalyptus scoparia - Wallangarra white gum
  • Eucalyptus sideroxylon - Red ironbark, Mugga

 

The following eucalyptus trees are indigenous to the Granite Belt, and koalas have been known to roost in them, and sometimes eat them, but they are not favourite koala food trees.

  • Eucalyptus baueriana 
  • Eucalyptus bridgesiana
  • Eucalyptus caleyi subsp. caleyi

  • Eucalyptus campanulata - New England ash
  • Eucalyptus camphora subsp. camphora - Mountain swamp gum
  • Eucalyptus conica - Fuzzy box
  • Eucalyptus dalrympleana subsp. heptantha
  • Eucalyptus eugenoides
  • Eucalyptus interstans
  • Eucalyptus laevopinea - Silvertop stringybark
  • Eucalyptus mckieana
  • Eucalyptus nova-anglica - New England peppermint
  • Eucalyptus obliqua - Mesmate stringybark
  • Eucalyptus radiata
  • Eucalyptus radiata subsp. sejuncta
  • Eucalyptus williamsiana - William’s stringybark
