Our Awards

The local community was intrinsically involved in the building and fitting out of the Research Room to the side of the Old Council Chambers.
The Historical SocietFramed awardsy called a meeting of community groups to discuss funding the project and the necessity to house the family histories compiled by Jean Harslett.

The local newspaper gave free publicity and the Mayor initiated the fund with $1000.  Individuals and members arrived with donations of cash (some substantial).  The Rotary Club of Stanthorpe donated $10,000, many other local clubs and organisations sent cheques as did our distant members.  The result was that we had sufficient to pay for all materials and local tradesmen carried out all work free of charge.

We submitted a grant application to the National Library/National Archives and received a substantial grant for archival boxes and albums to properly store these family histories and thousands of early photographs.

In 2006, this preservation project earned us the highest Award from the National Trust Queensland:-

The John Herbert Memorial Award for Excellence.

We were finalists in the Community Achievement Awards for Heritage and Culture 2009. From 300 groups, we were rated in the top ten, which means we were in the top 3%.
