SHAKESPEARE UNDER THE STARS
“The Merchant of Venice”
7PM SUNDAY 24 OCTOBER 2010
AT BUNGAWARRA WINERY
Directed by Chris Desgrand

The Merchant of Venice, classified as a comedy, is considered one of William Shakespeare’s great plays. Like much of Shakespeare’s comedy, there are controversial attitudes that make you think as well as laugh. Directed by one of Stanthorpe Little Theatre’s popular actors, Christopher Desgrand, with a talented cast and crew, we guarantee our audience a great ride.
THE STORY involves two ‘merchants’ - Antonio, a Venetian merchant of considerable wealth, who makes his money from "ventures” using his fleet of ships, and Shylock, a successful Jewish moneylender, who is much maligned over his religion and the practice of lending money and charging interest. Soon to add to his bitterness, his daughter plans to elope with a Christian. Portia, a rich and beautiful heiress desired by many, is being courted by men from far and wide. She favours Bassanio, but her father has devised an ingenious test all suitors must perform - and the first to succeed wins her hand in marriage. Bassanio, a young fortune hunter, asks his dear friend Antonio for a loan to help him successfully court Portia and pay back his debts. With his assets tied up in his shipments, Antonio has to borrow the money Bassanio needs. Shylock agrees to lend it - but there is a vengeful catch …if the debt is not repaid, Antonio will forfeit –literally - one pound of his flesh!
Will Antonio pay his debt or be doomed to face Shylock’s knife? Will Bassanio pass the test and win Portia’s hand, heart and fortune? Will Portia prove she’s more than just a pretty face or any man’s trophy?
Come along and all will be revealed! Shakespeare’s skullduggery, romance and revenge in Granite Belt style - under the stars surrounded by gum trees, granite boulders and grape vines, with a glass of good local wine … now that’s a great night ou
