Tuesday 6th April
What a lovely Easter break! I had a fabulous time camping and catching up with family and friends, not it's back to work again. We've organised our next round of training sessions. tehy will be taking place on 20th and 21st April 2010. and will again run 2 seperate courses to include strong board-stong organisation and emergency volunteering. Anybody wishing to recieve information or come along be it from an organisation or just individuals should contact Jess on the details below. Hope to see you all there.
It's easy to make a buck, but alot tougher to make a difference.
Thursday April 1st - April Fools!!!!

Just a quick update to let you all know that I have drawn the raffle. The winners are
$100 Seafood Voucher - D.Allen
Family Night out at Shake Rattle n Bowl - R. Bau
Hamper of Gifts - Dina
Set of Steak Knives - Mr. Hilton.
A special thank you to all who sold raffle tickets, bought raffle tickets or dontated prizes. We've raised $450.
No one can do everything but everyone can do something.
Tuesday 23rd March
What a success! The training session was fantastic. It was a great opportunity for VQ to earn about the demographics of the region and the feedback from groups who attended was very positive. The only negative feedback in fact was the lack of catering - VQ have now promised to cater all future training sessions/workshops!!!!
Everything is running along really smoothly. Keep those sign ups coming in guys. Anyone who was unable to attend the last training session should contact me for the handouts and information you missed out on. Looking forward to the easter break.
I used to think someone should do something - then I realised I was someone.

Wednesday 17th March
Free Training Session - Volunteer Recruitment and Appraisal.
Sessions will be run both through the day and in the evening at the youth centre in Hilton Street. Places are limited please contact Jess at CDS for more details.
Jess from CDS and Julian from Volunteering Queensland will be available on Wednesday also to help anyone complete their sign up as well as update their profiles on the Volunteering Queensland database.
Silence equals nonexistence. If I don't raise my voice, it's like I never existed.
Tuesday 9th March 2010
Invitations are curently being issued for the above training session and the trainers from Volunteering Queensland are packing their bags, only one week to go!
If you have not yet recieved your invitation please do not hesitate to contact me on 0439 036 510 to organise an invite or to check times. There will now be an additional training session at 11am on the same day (wednesday 17th March) as well as 2 additional session in Warwick. If you cannot make it to a Wednesday session in Stanthorpe I can organise you entry to a session in Warwick on either Tuesday or Thursday, but remember places are limited so please be quick. If you have recieved an invitation and know of any other community gorups/volunteers you think could benefit from attending this session please pass the information along to them and have them contact me also. As I'm sure you can imagine it's hard to get in contact with every organisation in the Southern Downs.
I hope everybody had a fabulous Apple and Grape - not alot more to report this week Apple and Grape, as much fun as it was has managed to slow everything down for me, I think every organisation in the district was too busy to think about anything else.
Have a fabulous week everybody hopefully there'll be more exciting news to update next week.
Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.

Wednesday March 3rd
I would like to intorduce you all to Bette, she will be helping coordinate the project from a Warwick point of view. Her contact details are available from Jess at CDS for any one wishing to get more involved in the Warwick community.
I have been to visit the Stanthorpe High School this week to talk to senior students about getting involved in their community through volunteering. This is a great opportunity for them to gain an edge on their competitors for the purpose of both employment and entry to university. I've decided that the youth of Australia (12-25 year olds - a catagory which I fall into for the next 4 weeks!) may only make up 13.2% of our population but they also make up 100% of our future and the sooner we can get them started the better off they and Australia will be in the long run. Without volunteers Australia stops.
Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless but because they're priceless.

Wednesday24th March Update
WE HAVE A DATABASE!!!!
Volunteer Queensland have come to the party with the database you can now head to www.volqld.org.au and sign on as either a volunteer wishing to get involved or an organisation who needs volunteers to help them. Make sure you sign on under the "Southern Downs" region to ensure you don't get mixed up with the other sections of Queensland. If you need help with this call Jess.
Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.
Hi there,
Have you heard about the new project under way at Stanthorpe Community Development Service? As the new Volunteer Project Coordinator I want to know what I can do to help you and your organisation.
As you may not be aware CDS has recently received funding as part of the Queensland Governments Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation Blue Print for the Bush: Our Place, Our Future. This funding has been made available to create a database for volunteers within the Southern Downs region. The project is also being supported by Volunteering Queensland and The Southern Downs Regional Council.
This internet based database will enable any organisation that uses volunteers to be easily linked with individuals wishing to get involved with their community.
Your organisation will be able to include information regarding your services as well as the specific skills or qualifications required of anyone wishing to volunteer with your organisation.
Individuals wishing to volunteer will also be able to log on and do the same.
Below are just a few examples of the benefits of using volunteers within your organisation.
- Become part of a social network
- Create opportunities for strengthening connections and forming closer ties within a community
- Gain personal satisfaction and sense of pride that comes from doing something worthwhile for the community and the environment
- The positive feelings associated with making a contribution and doing something, rather than just "talking about it"
- Meet new people, make new friends and get to know the neighbours
- Grow in self esteem and self confidence
- Participate in healthy, active and enjoyable activities
- Have fun with like-minded people
- Pursue a passion
A service like this has never been available within the southern downs region before and best of all it’s free!
Over the next 7 weeks I will be available for consultation with any organisation or individuals wishing to receive more information about this service.
Please do not hesitate to contact me to get involved or to receive further information.
