CDS is a community-based, not-for-profit incorporated organisation run by a voluntary Management Committee, that seeks to sponsor, undertake, develop and make known community activities in the fields of family and social well-being, proceeding on a self-help basis where possible and practicable.  The organisation provides services within the Stanthorpe area of the Southern Downs Regional Council.

The organisation has been in operation since 1986 and is funded, under a range of programs, by the Queensland Department of Communities to conduct the following activities:
 
  • Support people in crisis 
  • Provide quality community resources, information and referral 
  • Assess community needs, initiate, facilitate and sponsor projects 
  • Auspice community groups and support volunteers
  • Liaise and network with business, government and non-government agencies and services at local, regional, State and national levels in pursuit of the  organisation’s objectives.
 
Sponsored organisations and services include the Granite Belt Neighbourhood Centre, Kids Korner (occasional child care centre), Stanthorpe Family Day Care and Stanthorpe Youth Development Committee and Youth Centre 
Services provided by CDS include a Community Legal Service, Emergency Relief, Counselling, Domestic Violence Information and Referral and a Community Resource Library.
Projects are conducted in the areas of parent and family support, youth development, child abuse and domestic violence prevention, and community education.  Other services provided at the premises include Family Day Care playgroups and toy library, Outside School Hours and Vacation Care.

Strategic Priorities till 2012 (in addition to core service delivery)
By 2012, CSDS will have:
• Rationalised and re-utilised its resources so that programs and physical spaces achieve their full potential
• Developed & maintained a strong volunteer culture
• Implemented the Standards for Community Services and streamlined associated processes, procedures and reporting
• Supported initiatives included in the Stanthorpe 2020 Community Plan
• Developed a structural response (roles, responsibilities and processes) to the overall day to day management and coordination of the organisation
• Built a stronger organizational culture by improving communication between the many groups, and
• Developed an ethos and implemented practices that address its environmental responsibilities
