The natural beauty, and environmental and heritage values, of one of the most precious of Stanthorpe's assets is being put at risk through a Council project to "upgrade" the Quart Pot Creek walking tracks.

Where there was once intact bushland, there is now a three metre wide clearing through the bush from Heritage Park to the Red Bridge and beyond...The beautiful natural rock formations at the "little red bridge" have been defaced with a concrete ramp.  Also at stake are the walking tracks along the southern side of the creek to Pioneer Parade and Kingston Road, and surrounding bushland.

See http://www.flickr.com/photos/41263886@N02/ for before and after photos.

And all this without any consultation with the numerous residents, individuals and community groups that have contributed so much time and effort over so many years to upgrading and enhancing these areas!

How can this have happened?
Where have we gone wrong?
What can we do about it?
How can we work together to make sure it doesn't happen again?
How can we promote accessibility and still protect that which people are wanting to access?

I don't know the history of the area, but to me it looks like a lot of manual effort has gone into the building the existing pathways, with a view to minimise the impact on the environment.

And what is the purpose of this concrete 'slab', it goes from nowhere to nowhere, it's made it harder, not easier to navigate and it's ugly.   :-\

If there was a community consultation, I'd like to know with which community they consulted.

Have just received some good news.

Council has this morning advised that the concrete ramp at the Little Red Bridge will be demolished and the area restored as completely as possible. :D

They have also advised that they will work with local landcare and bushcare groups to regenerate the newly cleared area from Heritage Park to the Red Bridge to minimise degradation from the new concrete pathway, and will not undertake any further upgrades of the walking tracks without community consultation.

Thank goodness for that! ;D

Hooray!  We sure must have a lot of influence on this forum :)

I saw it with my own eyes today, they've done a good job.
