Mark Carter - Song Lyrics

Dawn Service Anzac Day       (Written by Mark Carter)

I stood there in the dawn – bugle calling in the day,
Diggers at attention, each in their own way,
Chests with medals – fields of France – white cliffs of Dover,
When I heard one fella’ say “Thank God that’s over.”

Those words left me wondering why he was there,
If he didn’t like it – why did he even care?
I’m sure he’d like to put those memories away
Never bring them back – not even Anzac Day.

But the strength in this man is the force to not forget,
He puts himself through this each year so his journey’s been worth it,
So you and me and generations sitting on our knee
Thank God and never go and see what that soldier’s eyes did see.

Think about it if you can – think every woman – every man,
Think of the memories being lived for you today,
Get up and go along to the Dawn Service – Anzac Day.
Make his memories worth it – he’s not struggling in vain,

Take the time to remember – Lest we forget – Eternal Flame,
Go inside to the quiet – count your blessings in the cold,
And thank God you don’t have the memories haunting that old soldier’s soul.

Later that morning after the parade,
In the Garden of Remembrance – wreaths being laid,
I saw that same gentleman – standing tall and proud and brave,
The tears in his eyes as his respects were paid.

Think about it if you can – think every woman – every man,
Think of the memories being lived for you today,
Get up and go along to the Dawn Service – Anzac Day.
